SOUTH OF MARKET, San Francisco — San Francisco’s Sixth Street Pedestrian Safety Project is complete, according to the city’s transit agency, following years of work on one of its most dangerous walking corridors.
SFMTA says the work between Market and Howard streets reduced general vehicle lanes from four to three, widened sidewalks, installed new signal equipment at Stevenson and Natoma streets and added crossings and curb extensions. Decorative sidewalk elements and lighting were also part of the effort. The agency held a completion celebration in September 2025.
The changes are relevant to residents of SoMa and people visiting hotels, social services, businesses and transit connections around Sixth Street. Physical redesign can improve crossing visibility, but a completed capital project does not mean road users can disregard signals or that every collision risk has disappeared.
What SoMa residents should know
People walking or cycling should use marked crossings and follow current signals. Nearby businesses can consult SFMTA for loading-zone rules and report damaged equipment or unsafe crossings through city service channels.
