SOUTH OF MARKET, San Francisco — SoMa West Dog Park, near Duboce Avenue and Stevenson Street, provides a dedicated off-leash exercise area in a part of San Francisco where public open space is limited.
San Francisco Recreation and Parks lists opening hours from 5 a.m. to midnight and requires people to pick up pet waste, prevent destructive digging, control excessive barking and keep licenses and vaccinations current. Dogs should remain leashed outside designated off-leash spaces and must not be left unattended. The city also asks dog walkers to limit the number of animals under their control to eight.
The dog park was developed on former freeway-related land as part of a city project completed in 2014. Its existence should not be taken as permission to allow dogs off leash in neighboring parks or on public sidewalks, where separate rules apply.
What SoMa residents should know
Pet owners should check for maintenance closures and use city reporting channels for damaged fencing or unsafe conditions. Keeping the park clean and supervising animals help ensure it remains useful to residents.
